Glenwood Springs High School selected for Legacy initiative

Glenwood Springs High School has been selected to participate in the Colorado Legacy School initiative, which will give the school a chance to triple the number of high school students who can take college-level courses.

GSHS is one of 11 Colorado schools named by the Colorado Legacy Foundation program, which draws funding from the National Math and Science Initiative. The initiative helps increase accessibility and success in rigorous math, science and English Advanced Placement (AP) courses by funding teacher training, student exam fees, and classroom equipment and supplies.

“The Colorado Legacy Schools initiative provides students with the opportunity to develop the academic content knowledge, skills and intellectual capacity to succeed beyond the walls of their classroom,” said Dr. Helayne Jones, president and CEO of the Colorado Legacy Foundation. “These 11 schools present a unique opportunity to expand Advanced Placement success into rural communities across the state.”

Four other Western Slope schools were also selected this round: Grand Valley, Paonia, Cedaredge and Battle Mountain. Twenty-three schools have already implemented the initiative, with the most recent group demonstrating a 113 percent increase in AP enrollment.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be chosen for this grant,” said Principal Paul Freeman. “We will not only be able to serve up to 285 students — up from 84 — we will also for the first time be able to offer computer science and all categories of science and math classes at the AP level.”
