GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Firefighters from Glenwood Springs and Colorado River Fire Rescue responded and quickly contained an early-morning blaze Wednesday at an unoccupied house on Blake Avenue.

According to Glenwood Springs Fire Chief Gary Tillotson, the fire was reported at 1:47 a.m. at 1021 Blake, and crews were on scene shortly thereafter.

“Neighbors called 911 to report a fire could be seen at an unoccupied residence,” Tillotson said. “Firefighters arrived to find flames venting through an exterior wall and the roof.”

The fire originated in the back, southeast side of the one-story house, and was contained to that area before being extinguished, he said.

The elderly owner of the home does not live there, he added, so the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

In addition to three units from the Glenwood Springs Fire Department, one engine was called in from Colorado River Fire Rescue to assist and the Glenwood Springs Police Department was on hand for traffic control, Tillotson said.

Firefighters were on scene for about two hours to mop up, he said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but given the age of the early 20th century structure it may have been electrical, he said.

Tillotson said there was “significant” smoke damage to the interior contents of the home, but that structural damage was minimal and no adjacent structures were threatened, he said.
