Hanging Lake Trail closed on Thursday

The Hanging Lake Trail will be closed Thursday for maintenance work.

Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District crews will use chain saws to cut and remove approximately 10 trees from the trail corridor. For the safety of the crew and the public, the trail will be closed for the work, according to a White River National Forest press release.

“Our work this week will focus on removing some hazard trees and closing a number of the social trails that have developed over the summer,” said District Ranger Aaron Mayville. “With the increase in use on the Hanging Lake Trail, a number of new trail routes have been created, which is but one example of the environmental degradation that we’re seeing up there. Please stay on the designated routes, and encourage others to do the same — we all want Hanging Lake to remain healthy and beautiful.”

Colorado Department of Transportation will close Interstate 70’s Exit 125 and the off-ramp Wednesday night, and the Forest Service will post staff at the trailhead throughout the day.

For more information about the management of Hanging Lake, contact the Eagle-Holy Cross Office at 970-827-5715, or stop by during business hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
