Health Column: Gluten-free apps on your iPhone

I am a techy nerd. Like many folks out there, I love gadgets and I’m never without my iPhone (so I can check on fun facts — like when Nixon was president and who’s who in the movies).

I also use my phone to assist in the constant battle to maintain a gluten-free diet. Here are my favorite apps:

1. Gluten Free Fast Food: I like this one because it lays out what’s OK to eat at major fast food restaurants. I would caution you to double check with the fast food restaurant that you are visiting as the app may not be up to date and each restaurant may have different menus.

2. Gluten Free News: I also like to be up to date on what is going on in the gluten-free world. This app provides articles on living gluten free, why gluten free is healthy and so much more. It’s a fun app if you like to be “in the know.”

3. Glutenology: This app is a good one especially for beginners. It goes over the basics of living gluten free and includes items like a list of grains and foods that contain gluten. It also offers additional resources and shopping tips.

4. Find Me Gluten Free: I like to eat out, that’s no secret. Find Me Gluten Free helps narrow the search to only gluten-free restaurants (including menus). It’s been particularly helpful to me when traveling. As always, check with the restaurant on topics like cross-contamination issues, etc.

Try the apps out and tell me what you think. Feedback is encouraged.
