HEALTH: Fall is a time for reflection

“To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring.” — George Santayana

As summer gives way to fall, the light changes subtly and autumn colors abound, I can’t help but feel so very grateful to live in Colorado and be witness to the changing seasons. It is such a blessing to see the evolution and yet stability of nature.

I am writing as I sit on a bench in the fall sunlight right beside the flowing Clear Creek in Golden, listening to the last sounds of summer. The leaves on the trees are changing and soon will fall causing the rustling by the gentle breeze to no longer be heard until spring comes again. Everything is just a little more quiet around me compared to the bustling of summer visitors.

Nature’s rhythm is so timeless, so perfect. When I take time to sit and notice its subtle, graceful rhythm and movement through the seasons, I can feel the Divine Impulse active in everything around me. I can see the perfection in the Universe with my very eyes. I am humbled and filled with gratitude for the blessings of life.

This reflective time as I am writing helps me feel the rhythm of my own soul’s journey and evolution. Just as nature goes through her own seasons so effortlessly, so my soul goes through its own seasons of change and transformation.

I am harvesting and storing all the fruits of the lessons I’ve learned over the warm, sunny days of summer when my soul was alive with challenges and possibilities. I will use these experiences to nourish my soul in the quiet, gestational months of winter. As fall is now coming into her own in the outer world, my inner world is preparing for the quieter times of its own fall and winter.

I am beginning to withdraw my exuberant energy of summer to a more reflective energy of the cooler days and nights and shorter days of sunlight. My dream time is becoming more vivid and animated as my awake time becomes more still. My inner rhythm changes with the outer rhythm of nature moving through each season.

This is such a beautiful dance that we all have going on if we are awake and aware to what is happening outside of us and in our interior landscape. If we truly take in the beauty of the changing seasons of nature, we will be in a happier state of mind and a more peaceful sense in our inner world.

If we take it one step further and awaken to the changes in our inner world as the outer world goes through its changes, we can see and feel the grace that bestows its gentle guidance and love to us always. We see the perfection in everything and sense the oneness of all that is.

As we begin the journey from fall to winter, I encourage you to stay awake and aware of the miraculous flow of life within and without. Take the lessons you learned this summer into your inner world for reflection and the growth of your soul. Let them gestate during the winter months to be rebirthed in the spring as the creative energy of your soul’s evolution.
