PARACHUTE — Parts of Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 6 west of here were reopened around 6:30 p.m. Friday following a three-hour closure when heavy rains sent flood waters and debris over the roadways, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation and local emergency officials.

CDOT’s cotrip.org website was reporting Saturday that both westbound and eastbound I-70 and adjacent Highway 6 had been cleared and were fully open.

The interstate was shut down between mile markers 69-72, in the vicinity of Kelly Gulch, after heavy rains moved through the area about 3:30 p.m. Friday. Highway 6 was also shut down a short time later due the flooding and debris.

The debris flow came from the burn area from last summer’s Pine Ridge Fire northwest of Parachute.

Westbound traffic was backed up at Parachute where motorists were directed off of the interstate during the closure. Eastbound traffic was stopped near DeBeque.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center reported no other signs of flooding beyond the mud and debris coming down from the gulch west of Parachute. The Post Independent did receive reports of power outages in the area at the time of the storm.

Earlier in the afternoon, the National Weather Service posted flood warnings for much of Garfield County, including the Parachute area and an area southeast of Glenwood Springs. The flood alerts were lifted by about 6 p.m.
