I-70 work in canyon extended to mid-Nov.
Work on Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon, originally set for completion by the end of this month, is now expected to be done in mid-November.
Truesdell Corp., contractor on the $7 million project, said Thursday that the Colorado Department of Transportation has added work, including further Hanging Lake Tunnel repairs, speed-monitoring loops and increased pavement depth.
Vehicle loop detectors, which count each car that enters and exits, will be replaced at the eastbound tunnel portal. These help ensure that no cars get stranded in the tunnel.
The work is on five bridge decks between mile markers 124.64 and 128.12, a total of 3.48 miles. Repairs include removal of existing asphalt and waterproofing membrane to be replaced by a thin-bonded polyester concrete overlay. Paving will extend into the Hanging Lake Tunnel.
Seventy-five percent of construction was completed by mid-October. Paving of the westbound lanes was completed the first week of October, and work on the eastbound lanes began on Sept. 24. On the westbound lanes, upcoming work includes rail demolition and replacement and permanent striping.
Thirteen hundred feet of bridge rail replacement on the left westbound lane will be installed by early November.
Lane closures remain in effect westbound between mile markers 128 and 126 and eastbound between mile markers 124 and 126.
Also Thursday, CDOT announced that the eastbound exit ramp at the Hanging Lake Rest Area at mile post 125 will be closed from 10 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. The closure is needed to add a second layer of pavement to the exit ramp.
The closure may be postponed if the weather is bad.
