Letter: In response to Dr. Mohler’s 1-31 health column

Dr. Phil, You are wrong about the value of preventive ultrasound screenings offered by LifeLine. Perhaps if Fruita coach Jim Stockert had been screened, he would not be dead of a stroke at 61.

As I told you on the phone last year, a friend who had a family history of strokes (two younger siblings and her father) was told by her general practitioner that he heard no constrictions in her carotid and did not need an ultrasound. She went to Lifeline and their test showed a significant blockage. She went back to her GP with this info and he reluctantly ordered an ultrasound at Community Hospital and then a CT, all of which revealed a major blockage. Two weeks later, surgery at St. Mary’s done by Dr. Narrod reported the carotid was 90-percent blocked, which he repaired before total blockage made it inoperable.

Please confine yourself to railing against the quackery of chiropractors, naturopaths, gluten-free zealots, wasted mega-dose supplements, and other charlatans.

People should be responsible for they own health care. Doctors are mechanics we hire to do a job, not infallible gods of medicine. Being aware of family history, blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising daily, and eating a good diet is the responsible way to live a good, healthy life.
