Letter: Keep Colorado National Monument as is … with better marketing

The major argument in favor of turning our local scenic gem into a National Park seems to be that such designation would bring more tourism and tourism dollars; people are supposedly driving right on through Happy Valley in order to make Moab (and Arches National Park) by nightfall.

But we cannot have our cake and eat it, too. If we “upgrade,” we will need to take the good with the bad, including traffic issues and we will not (nor should we) be able to pick and choose which Federal regulations we’ll allow both inside and outside of park boundaries. And knowing politics and personalities here in the Grand Valley, consensus will never be reached on something as simple as the name of the new entity.

Perhaps rather than reinventing the wheel, we should maintain the status quo but have the National Park Service assemble and broadcast nationwide a series of public service announcements explaining what a “National Monument” actually comprises, including some prime examples with video highlighting our local park, recreational and educational opportunities, the sheer scenic and scientific wonders, and why we need the system of monuments in our national natural portfolio. We do not need a new name or new administration; we need for folks to understand and appreciate that perhaps a tour of United States National Monuments would be an admirable addition to one’s “bucket list.”
