Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

A thoughtful letter from Mike, Gail and Jeff in the April 19 paper draws attention to the sign that stands outside our school. “American casualties in Iraq to this day,” the sign reads. Below is an ever-changing number. Last week it was in the high six hundreds, this week it’s in the sevens.

The letter noted that it was hard for its authors to believe that the teachers or administration of Yampah had anything to do with this, as students should be capable of independent thought and political analysis.

In conclusion the letter beseeches the students responsible for the sign, in the interest of fairness, to immediately work on creating an opposing tote board that would reflect “deaths caused by terrorism and tyranny ” in order to reflect the millions of deaths caused by terrorism and dictatorial regimes.”

As a teacher of students capable of independent thought and political analysis, I would ask them: if terrorism is responsible for the deaths of the many millions noted on the new tote board, what or who is responsible for the 707 (as of today) deaths on the first sign?
