Rifle City Hall closed down Friday morning after the unexpected death of Linda Stilson, longtime manager of the Art Dague Pool in Rifle.

Stilson suffered a stroke about a month ago and was recuperating. The cause of death is still undetermined.

City Hall employees and community members were hit hard by the news.

“The community has lost a big heart and a person who was so beneficial to Rifle,” said City Manager Matt Sturgeon. “I feel sorry for the youth in this area — she did so much for them.”

Stilson had worked as recreation manager at the municipal swimming pool since 2006.

City Hall closed its doors for the remainder of the day Friday after city employees were informed of Stilson’s death. City offices are scheduled to reopen on Monday morning.

“She was family and so close to so many of us and people were finding it hard to deal with,” Sturgeon said.

Memorial services have not yet been announced.
