John Coughran, a patrol sergeant with Fruita Police Department, has been on the force for more than 15 years.

“The best thing about my job is you never know what’s going to happen in the next 15 minutes,” he said. “It’s always changing.”

Coughran has two daughters — Catlyn and Kidwyn — and in his free time he trains for ultra-marathons.

“He has become a friend to many citizens and is often described as one of the ‘coolest’ officers around,” said Judy Macy, Fruita’s police chief.
