GYPSUM — Firefighters drew high praise for their quick response to a Cotton Ranch house fire Sunday afternoon.

No one was injured.

The owners were outside enjoying the clear October afternoon, when they heard glass breaking. Because they live on a fairway of the Gypsum Creek Golf Course, they thought perhaps an errant golf shot had hit a window, said Jim Stewart, one of the owners.

They looked up the fairway and there were no golfers in sight. Then they turned around to see smoke coming out of an upstairs window, Stewart said.

They called the fire department, and the first truck from the Gypsum Fire Department was on the scene in moments, Stewart said.

“I’m grateful they were here so quickly. It could have been much worse,” Stewart said.

The fire was contained on the upper floor; however the first floors suffered water and smoke damage.

Gypsum Fire Chief Justin Kirkland said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Responders came from the Gypsum Fire Department, the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, the Eagle River Fire Protection District, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and the Eagle County Ambulance District.
