Books are in her blood.
Marya Johnston, the owner of Out West Books — located at 533 Main St., in Grand Junction — spent 20 years of her life helping at her mom’s bookstore in Utah. As an avid outdoors woman and traveler, after moving to Grand Junction, Johnston saw a need for a local bookstore, focused on the history of the region.
“I limited it to authors either from the West or who write about the West,” she said.
Johnston also noticed Grand Junction didn’t have many options for travel books. During her travels in previous years, she saw many people had the same book and they would stick to what the book said. She explained there are more than one travel guide or book available for different locales and saw a need to provide other options for adventurers. She additionally loves to give advice to those traveling.
Out West Books offers a large children’s book section as well, and Johnston encourages customers to explore the shelves. If a book isn’t stocked, it can be ordered as long as it’s in print.
“A customer came in the other day and wanted a book,” Johnston said. “He couldn’t remember the title; he brought it up on Amazon, and he could have just pushed order, but instead he had me order it.”
NOT JUST BOOKS OFFERED
This downtown store isn’t limited to just books — bookmarks, cards, and historic photos (showing a glimpse of western Colorado’s past) are available for viewing and purchase.
Out West Books is also home to area maps, including a type of map called 7 1/2-minute topography.
Along with her daily store operations, Johnston plans for local authors to stop by and children’s story times.
Out West Books is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
