Firefighters with the Colorado River Fire Protection District extinguish flames that destroyed a large barn Friday at 0258 Garfield County Road 223 just east of Rifle. The barn, which had a small apartment attached to the south side, was a complete loss, said CRFPD Operations Chief Rob Jones. No one was injured and two calves inside the barn at the time the fire started were safely extracted before crews arrived on the scene. The cause of the fire is being investigated, Jones said. Grand Valley Fire Protection District, Glenwood Springs Fire Department, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Rifle Police Department and Colorado State Patrol assisted in the effort.
