GYPSUM — No one was killed when a private plane crashed Friday afternoon, just short of the runway at Eagle County Regional Airport.

The 1964 Piper Commanche came to rest on the incline below the east end of the runway.

Both people on board were transported from the scene by ambulance and taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.

The plane crashed at about 3 p.m. Friday.

The winds were calm when the crash occurred, witnesses said.

The plane was carrying a minimal amount of fuel at the time of the crash and very little spilled onto the ground.

“We’re thankful there was no fire or fuel spill,” said Kris Friel, Eagle County’s communications director.

According to witnesses, the plane crashed about 750 feet from the east end of the runway.

Airport operations were temporarily suspended while emergency personnel responded to the crash. Flights resumed less than two hours after the crash.

The aircraft involved in Friday’s crash is registered in California. Eagle County Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting, Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, Gypsum Fire Protection District, Eagle County Paramedic Services and the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident. An investigation will be conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration.
