Re-1 board OKs video monitoring policy

CARBONDALE — The Roaring Fork District Re-1 school board voted 5-0 at its Wednesday meeting here to approve a new district policy regarding the use of video surveillance in schools and on school buses.

One minor change was made to the policy regarding requests to view video footage by members of the public and parents, specifying that requests must be made in writing to the principal or designee at the school in question, with as much detail about the date and time of any incidences as possible.

“I can see this becoming burdensome if we start getting requests for every little thing,” Re-1 board member Bob Johnson said. “I just don’t want to see us getting overwhelmed with this.”

The policy states, in part, “Video cameras may be used to monitor student behavior in school facilities and on school vehicles. … Students in violation of conduct rules shall be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with established board policy and regulations governing student conduct and discipline.

“Video surveillance shall be used only to promote the order, safety and security of students [and] staff, and to protect district property.”

Video cameras are also used by the district to monitor the flow of people in and out of school buildings, both during school hours and after-school events.

The policy spells out procedures for records-keeping, storage and security of records and how viewing requests are to be handled.
