Resident displaced after Carbondale mobile home burns

Carbondale firefighters knocked down a blaze in the Mountain Valley Mobile Home Park on Wednesday night before it spread to other structures, but the resident was left homeless, according to officials with the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District.

Firefighters were called at 8:04 p.m. to a report of a fire at space B-12 in the mobile home park at 171 Highway 133, located behind the Red Rock Diner and Garcia’s restaurants. Several firefighters were already involved in a training exercise at an unoccupied house farther south along Highway 133 when the call came in, said Carbondale Deputy Fire Chief Rob Goodwin.

Flames and heavy smoke were visible from the double-wide modular structure upon arrival, and firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire before any nearby mobile homes were involved, Goodwin said.

The lone resident of the home was not there at the time, and no injuries were reported.

“When our first engine crews arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the structure and quite a bit of flame coming from the rear of the building at the roof,” Goodwin said in a news release.

Firefighters attacked the fire from both the front door and the rear of the house, he said, and the fire was knocked down and controlled within about 15 minutes.

“The volunteer and paid firefighters did an outstanding job of quickly attacking and controlling this fire,” Goodwin said. “Their great work kept this fire from becoming a much larger problem as there were numerous other residences nearby that were threatened.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but is not believed to be suspicious in nature, Goodwin said. The amount of loss has not been determined, though it is believed to be a total loss, Goodwin said.

Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District responded with four fire trucks and 19 personnel, and the Carbondale Police Department was called to assist. The owner of the home is staying with a friend, Goodwin said.
