Retired Senior Volunteer Program is looking for volunteers

The High Country Retired Senior Volunteer Program is looking for volunteers.

RSVP is part of Senior Corps, a national service program, and has been serving the Roaring Fork Valley for 40 years. RSVP volunteers, age 55 and older, use their skills, abilities and life experiences to serve the nonprofit agencies in Garfield and Pitkin counties such as LIFT-UP, Literary Outreach, Mountain Valley Developmental Services and Garfield County Senior Programs, to name a few. Other national focus areas include services to veterans, education and disaster response.

Some of the benefits of becoming an RSVP volunteer include the opportunity to work with a professional volunteer coordinator who will explore various volunteer opportunities and provide follow-up and support as needed; free excess liability insurance while volunteering; and the opportunity to share and interact with other older Americans as they seek to give back to their communities.

New research finds that volunteering is a pathway to employment. Key findings indicate that volunteers have a 27 percent higher likelihood of finding a job after being out of work than nonvolunteers; volunteers without a high school diploma have a 51 percent higher likelihood of finding employment; and volunteers living in rural areas have a 55 percent higher likelihood of finding employment. Additionally, research shows that persons who volunteer live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives.
