Rifle 13th among Colorado cities in Ashley Madison accounts

Rifle is Garfield County’s second-largest city in terms of population, but when it comes to a percentage of that population possibly looking to cheat on their spouse, the town is No. 1 in Garfield County.

At least that’s the finding in a report analyzing the number of Ashley Madison accounts in Colorado’s cities. Rifle placed 13th out of the 139 cities analyzed in the study, which was conducted by the website RoadSnacks.net.

The website used the database of Ashley Madison accounts to count how many accounts were created in each ZIP code.

User data from the website AshleyMadison.com, which bills itself as “the most famous name in infidelity and married dating,” was hacked last summer, with hackers obtaining sensitive user information from the online dating service.

RoadSnacks.net counted the number of accounts — it distinguishes between accounts and people, further clarifying that “it is possible to create dummy accounts assigned to a city or to have multiple accounts” — in each ZIP code and then matched the ZIP code to a city.

Accounts registered in a ZIP code that fell into more than one city were applied to each city.

RoadSnacks.net then used population estimates, which as The Aspen Times noted are different than data from the U.S. Census Bureau, for the ZIP codes to identify the number of cheaters per capita.

According to the analysis, there are 609 accounts in Rifle, which the analysis also claims has a population of 10,027 people, which is more than Census Bureau estimates. That puts the number of would-be cheaters per capita in Rifle at 6.1 percent.

That is higher than neighboring cities and towns in Garfield County including Glenwood Springs, which placed 25th in the state in the analysis; Parachute, which placed 42nd; New Castle, 59th; Silt, 80th; and Carbondale, which was ranked 82nd.

In the less than reputable subject, Rifle also beat out Grand Junction, which was No. 15 in the report.

Denver placed No. 12, one spot ahead of Rifle, and nearby resort towns Aspen and Vail both placed in the top 10 — ninth for Aspen and fifth for Vail. The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs topped the list.

As the analysis notes, most of the cities and towns toward the top of the list “are smaller cities in Colorado that have a high percentage of its residents with an account on Ashley Madison.”

The analysis notes more than 32 million accounts were created worldwide, and more than 207,920 in Colorado. It adds that “the going consensus is that almost all of them were created by men.”

The analysis looked only at cities with more than 2,000 people.
