Rifle starts ‘odd-even’ watering restrictions

Rifle — Effective July 8, residents and businesses in Rifle are being asked by city officials to go to an odd-even yard watering schedule and to water only between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 a.m.

The watering schedule will remain in effect through Sept. 30 or until further notice.

The odd-even watering schedule works like this: Properties with even addresses water on calendar days that are even. Example: The City Hall address is 202 Railroad Ave. The watering days for City Hall this week will be July 8, 10, 12 and 14. Properties with odd addresses water on calendar days that are odd. Example: The City O&M Building is 1221 E. Centennial Blvd. The watering days for the O&M Building this week are July 9, 11 and 13.

When there are 31 days in the month, because there otherwise would be two odd days in a row, any 31st day of the month will be a “wild card” day and both odd and even addresses can water. However, city officials ask that only 50 percent of the irrigation water one would normally apply be applied on those days.

Citizens may see certain public properties being watered daily. There are properties within Rifle city limits that use raw irrigation water. These properties are subject to different rules and will not be required to comply with these water restrictions. The cemetery, as an example, uses raw water.
