Roaring Fork Valley residents asked to weigh in on water matters

Roaring Fork Valley residents are invited to attend a meeting Thursday in Carbondale to learn how creation of the Colorado Statewide Water Plan can affect the basin.

The Watershed Collaborative Meeting will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Carbondale 3rd Street Center. It will include a presentation by Glenwood Springs engineer Louis Meyer, who will prepare the Colorado Basin Implementation Plan, a part of the statewide water plan. The plan must include projects and processes that will demonstrate how the Colorado Basin will meet a gap of 82,000 acre feet per year between demand and supply.

Overall, Colorado is expected to eventually face a gap of between 600,000 and 800,000 acre feet per year for municipal, industrial and energy needs.

“The only place to look for more water to make up the gap will be to continue the practice of Buy and Dry, which will cripple agriculture, passive and active conservation, or additional water diversions from the Colorado Basin watershed, including the Roaring Fork, Fryingpan, Crystal and tributaries,” the Watershed Collaborative steering committee said in a prepared statement.

Attendees will have a chance to give input to help the Watershed Collaborative team develop goals, measurable outcomes and projects that affect the Roaring Fork Valley.
