Small Businesses YOU Love: 2 popular eateries known for their locally-sourced ingredients

Grand Junction Business Incubator Center Executive Director Jon Maraschin promotes small-business ownership as the key to self-management.
“If you’re not afraid to work hard, you can be your own boss,” Maraschin said. “You’ll make the decisions, choose the culture you want to have, decide how to position your product and market it, decide who to sell it to and even effect social change” — if that’s your aim.
Plus, small-business owners have the ability to define their own desired level of success and then go for it.
“If you want to work 100 hours a week, and make a million, you can do that,” he continued. “Hard work in a small business really does pay off. … The flip side is that you can work less, 25-30 hours a week, too.”
And if you want to bring your kids to work, as the owner you can do that.
“You won’t have people telling you what to do, and you’ll be making money for yourself, not for someone else,” Maraschin added.
Being passionate about one’s product also plays a big role in building a business for success. And another “benefit of doing what you love is hopefully you’ll be a lot happier,” he said.
When Free Press readers were asked to nominate their favorite, local small businesses, suggestions came flying in over Facebook and email. Highlighted below are some small businesses you may love, too.
Grand Junction resident Katie Metli said she absolutely loves Bin 707 Foodbar, a downtown restaurant located at 225 N. Fifth St. (across from the Grand Junction City Hall). There’s both indoor and outdoor seating, plus this local hot spot is known for its brunch, lunch and dinner service seven days a week.
“The food is the best in town,” Metli said. “Josh (Niernberg, the chef/owner) takes great pride in the quality of the ingredients and also to support the local farmers. He constantly strives to keep the menu new and creative. The staff is always friendly and will go out of their way to make the experience great.”
According to Bin 707’s website, “While we do have some farm-to-table dishes, we do buy mostly organic produce, and 99% of our products are sourced fresh, it is our commitment to the economy which holds precedent to our menu and purchasing.”
Metli added that it’s hard to pick just one favorite dish at Bin 707: “My favorite is the burger, tacos and asparagus salad.”

SPOONS BISTRO & BAKERY
Another Grand Junction resident Ron Beach nominated Spoons Bistro & Bakery, located on the HopeWest campus at 3090 N. 12th St.
It “serves mostly locally grown meats, poultry, fruits and vegetables,” Beach said. “Nearly everything Spoons prepares and serves, I understand, is organically grown, making for a healthy gourmet-style menu. Serving portions are just the right size and the service is prompt and friendly. The atmosphere is pleasant and very clean.”
Beach also noted that “this restaurant is important to the community because the proceeds help fund the variety of hospice and palliative care services provided by HopeWest. Whether it’s breakfast, Sunday brunch, lunch or dinner, you’ll always have an enjoyable meal at Spoons knowing and you are supporting a wonderful community asset at the same time.”
Though Maraschin finds it difficult to pick just one favorite small business — “All of the companies we work with are like my children …” — he did mention a few notable, local companies that span a variety of services.
“Take Eye of the Tiger, LLC — here is a company that is in the dirty business of oil filtration, testing, etc., with a different twist; they help mines and power plants test, filter and diagnose their hydraulic and other oil systems which in turn saves money and helps the environment,” Maraschin noted in a recent email. “Our kitchen clients — I wouldn’t dare pick a favorite — continue to help me gain weight and discover new things (no, hotter isn’t necessarily better).I have the honor of working with a lot of our manufacturers and they are all wicked cool. Breweries? That’s a category all of its own; the folks at Kannah Creek have been part of the incubator family since the beginning and we are all better for it.”
