Sopris Elementary School starts father figure program

A meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sopris Elementary School in Glenwood Springs kicks off Watch D.O.G.S. — Dads Of Great Students.

The new program, starting with a pizza night, is meant for students and fathers and father figures at Sopris Elementary. Watch D.O.G.S. is an initiative of the National Center For Fathering.

Some students lack a father figure in their home, and the number of male teachers has been steadily declining in recent years, organizers say. More positive male role models are needed in the school setting.

Under the program, fathers and father figures can spend meaningful time with their students in the school setting and gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their student’s life. They also can learn how better to partner with the school to meet educational goals.

For more information on the program call 1-888-540-3647, e-mail watchdogs@fathers.com or visit http://www.fathers.com/watchdogs.

For pizza night information, call Sopris Elementary Assistant Principal John Trinca, 384-5402. Sopris Elementary is at 1150 Mount Sopris Drive.
