Outside as the warm afternoon bustle of the Thursday Downtown Farmers’ Market took place, inside the nearby Home Loan building lobby, State Sen. Steve King Thursday announced his plan to run for Mesa County Sheriff.

Surrounded by friends, family and supporters, the first-term Republican gave a brief speech which touched on the challenges ahead in Mesa County in light of new gun control laws, ongoing budgetary shortfalls, and commercial marijuana sales.

King hopes to win the seat now occupied by Sheriff Stan Hilkey, who is term-limited. The election will be held November 2014.

King remarked about his passion for public service and that he’s served the citizenry at the statewide level, but now he’d like to focus on serving Mesa County.

“I’ve been in Denver for 8 years now, I think it’s time to come home now,” King said.

In addition to serving two terms as state representative, King also has 30-plus years of law enforcement as a patrolman, investigator and owner of a security consulting firm.

Kings said a sheriff needs a specific skill set, and that he believes his experience in state politics combined with his background in law enforcement blend to make him an ideal candidate for the job.

King will finish is senate term, which expires Dec. 31, 2014.

King said to expect announcements very soon about who plans to run for his State Senate District 7 seat.
