SILT — Construction of the sidewalks along the north side of Main Street has started back up again and while some business owners have voiced frustration over the noise and street detours from the construction, the project will help to beautify the downtown when it is done, according to Mayor Rick Aluise.

Construction crews began tearing up the downtown sidewalk on the north side of Main Street last fall, but were ordered to stop by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) when the bad weather set in. CDOT allowed the work to start back up again on April 1. The sidewalks are being poured from Tim’s Tools to the Dollar General store.

“There’s still a bit of work to do,” Aluise said. “They’re creating consistent sidewalks all the way down the north side of Main.”

When completed, the sidewalks will be wider and have cut-outs, landscaping and lamp posts.

“It’s all part of our beautification program to create an attractive downtown,” Aluise said.

Funding for the project came from a $1 million grant from Garfield County.

“We’re very appreciative of it,” Aluise said. “This will really help to spruce up the downtown.”
