Sunnyside managers honored by USDA

This year, Glenwood’s Sunnyside Retirement Center was awarded Colorado’s “Site Managers of the Year” by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

For any of Colorado’s other rural development housing facilities, it would have been presented to a single director, but Sunnyside’s management considers their top three positions as basically equal: Marti Duprey is the director, Margie Trebesh serves as finance manager, and Dean Crabb rounds out the group as maintenance manager.

“We like to operate as a team,” observed Duprey.

Sunnyside has operated since the 1980s and offers independent living for the disabled and seniors 62 years old and up. They receive partial funding from the USDA and also accept vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Two years ago, Sunnyside won the award for “most improved” facility among 143 housing facilities, not all of which deal solely with the elderly.

The retirement center also garnered recognition for maintaining less than 1 percent vacancy for 2012 and 2013. It currently has a wait list of more than 50 for just 47 units. It’s an indication of tenant satisfaction — as is the award, which relies partially on nominations from residents.

“Our main concern is that our tenants are kept in a safe, secure, healthy, peaceful environment,” Duprey explained.
