Vail blew by Aspen in single-day lift ticket pricing for the holidays.

Vail Mountain has raised its walk-up window single-day rate to $139, a ticket agent for the resort confirmed Thursday. Beaver Creek, Vail’s sister resort, is also charging $139. Breckenridge and Keystone, also under the Vail Resorts umbrella, are charging $129 and $119, respectively.

Aspen Skiing Co. raised its walk-up window rate to $124 last weekend. That is expected to be the peak for the season, according to Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle.

Skico’s lift ticket is good at Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk. Skico doesn’t sell individual tickets to its four ski areas. In other words, a person skiing Buttermilk pays the same as someone skiing Aspen Mountain.

Skico also charges a $5 fee for customers who have to buy a RF card, the piece of plastic that gets scanned at the lower chairlifts. Repeat customers can reuse RF cards from prior seasons and avoid the $5 fee. First-time customers can use their card in the future.

Vail’s website said a $119 single-day lift ticket is available at Vail and Beaver Creek if it is purchased at least seven days in advance. Skico gives a discount for multi-day lift tickets purchased in advance but not for a single-day ticket.

Skico is able to charge its highest price ever, in part, because of so much early-season snow. It’s driving demand. The company has experienced “strong numbers” so far in the young season, according to Rich Burkley, Skico vice president of mountain operations. The peak period of the Christmas through New Year’s Day period starts Friday and continues through Jan. 1, he said.

“It’s been a charmed year,” Burkley said.
