Weather on Independence Pass prompts early closure

A westbound motorist passes through the winter gate on the Pitkin County side of Independence Pass, a few miles east of Aspen, on Tuesday afternoon. The Colorado Department of Transportation planned to close the pass Friday at noon, but due to inclement weather the closure has been rescheduled to Wednesday afternoon.

Independence Pass closed Wednesday afternoon and is expected to remain closed for the season.

The pass, which connects Pitkin and Lake counties via Highway 82, was originally slated to close Friday, but inclement weather forced the early closure, according to Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Tracy Trulove.

CDOT aims to reopen the pass each spring before Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting.
