WETZEL: The search for good gluten-free beer in Grand Junction
LIVING AGAINST THE GRAIN

Summertime conjures up thoughts of barbecues, golfing, spending time in the sun and having good times over a tasty brew. I will admit that I miss having a great beer while hanging out with friends and while there are several gluten-free beers in the area, I have finally found my favorite: Omission Beer.
Omission Beer was born when Widmer Brother’s CEO Terry Michaelson was diagnosed with celiac disease. Later, brewer Joe Casey’s wife was also diagnosed with the disease. Their love for beer and a normal-tasting, gluten-free beer became a mission. Thus, Omission Beer was born.
Omission Beer does contain barley but through a proprietary process (in which an enzyme is added to the beer to remove the gluten) it becomes gluten-free. According to the Omission Beer website: “While Omission Beer does contain barley, one of the ‘prohibited grains’ in this definition, all batches are tested by an independent lab using the R5 Competitive ELISA to ensure that gluten levels meet our standards. Although scientific evidence supports the testing, the evidence is not conclusive. All Omission Beer test results can be viewed at http://www.omissiontests.com.” Also, all equipment is thoroughly cleaned before the gluten-free beers are crafted.
Locally, many places carry Omission Beer, which comes in two different types: A lager and an ale. To date, the following liquor establishments carry Omission as well as other types of gluten-free beers and hard ciders:
COLLEGE LIQUORS: 2695 Patterson Road, #9, Grand Junction

FISHER’S LIQUOR BARN: 625 24 ½ Road, Grand Junction
The following establishments also carry Omission Beer:
Chipeta Golf Course
Orchard Mesa Lanes
When asked why they started carrying gluten-free beer, Chipeta Golf Course General Manager Doug Dominguez said: “When there is a market for an item, and the item is requested, we take that request into consideration and try to stock the item.”
While there are a lot of gluten-free beers in the market, Omission has become my favorite with its rich flavor and is, in my opinion, the best gluten-free beer out there. Try it, I’ll bet you’ll like it!
