Why the Giant Canyon Swing isn’t swinging

Why has Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park’s Giant Canyon Swing been shut down most of the summer?

Nancy Heard, the park’s general manager, said Thursday that “the giant pneumatic cylinder that powers the ride was nearing its 20-year lifespan. We expected to get a couple more years out of it, but the part wore out more quickly than expected, probably due to its popularity. There was not any safety issue related to the part wearing out; the ride simply could no longer be powered by the cylinder.”

Park operators can’t just go to the Giant Canyon Swing parts store to replace it.

“It is custom-made and requires precision machining, which takes about eight weeks for a part this size,” Heard said. “Since we were replacing the cylinder, we decided to also replace some other parts such as bushings and give it a complete makeover.

“The brass bushings are also custom-machined parts that also take weeks to fabricate. Replacing the cylinder and bushings requires that the entire top structure be disassembled and lifted off using a crane.”

Heard said park officials are waiting on the parts to be fabricated and delivered and still hope to have the swing running in September.
