Woman shot in abdomen near Glenwood

In what has initially been reported as an accident, a woman suffered a gunshot wound to her abdomen early Saturday morning just south of Glenwood Springs.

Valley View Hospital cared for the victim over the weekend, and she is recovering well, said Walt Stowe, the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office public information officer. The gunshot is believed to have occurred at about 3:20 a.m. at Buffalo Valley in a parked van in which deputies believe the woman lives.

Before being placed on anesthesia she told deputies was that it was an accident and that she was alone, which investigators are trying to confirm, said Stowe.

Investigators have not yet located the firearm. But judging by the size of the wound, they believe it was from a small-caliber round, possibly a .22, he said.

The sheriff’s office has not released the woman’s identity, citing an ongoing investigation.
