Look at yourself before judging others

Dear Editor,

After reading about Madelyn Toogood – the woman whose beating of her daughter was videotaped – I reflected, and thought about the times I was “punished” by my parents and teachers, and the times I had abused my own children physically or mentally. And finally thought that more likely than not we have all abused one another mentally and most likely physically, especially our own children.

This is not to justify Madelyn’s, yours or my behavior, but it is a time to practice looking at ourselves before judging or condemning another. This is truly the only way we can change this growing habit of violence, be it passive or aggressive.

We might take care of one another at stressful times like this rather than punish.
