Look for real obstacles to same-sex marriage
Grass Mesa
Dear Editor,
Perhaps I’m using old fashioned thinking, but it seems to me that if the group promoting the changing of the Constitution to allow same-sex marriage were to better place their efforts towards their real obstacles – hospitals and insurance companies, just to name a couple – then the people that are quite happy with the Constitution as it stands wouldn’t be kicking up such a ruckus.
The hospital rules, not the Constitution, are what do not allow anyone to visit in some cases except family.
The insurance companies, not the Constitution, are some of the ones that don’t recognize spousal benefits.
There are open door churches that don’t recognize this concept, but the doors to those that do are also wide open.
In regard to bequeathing any kind of property, there have always been wills, there has always been the ability to designate a beneficiary.
For as long as I can recall, any two financially qualified persons can jointly own homes, businesses, automobiles and so on.
To attempt to change the Constitution that affects an entire nation (280-plus million people) for the self interest of a small percentage is tantamount to taking a 10-pound sledgehammer to squash a mosquito: Hit or miss, you might make a heck of a mess!
