Louisiana native celebrates 100th birthday

RIFLE – Dix Keenan turned 100 on March Thursday.She celebrated at the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Rifle, where she has lived for the last five years.She has a southern accent and those who know her, often hear her stories from growing up in Louisiana. “It’s the most beautiful state, the most beautiful place in the whole entire world,” Keenan said when Amy Pierson, a nurse, asked her about the place where she grew up. “I love Louisiana.”Keenan moved to Colorado with her mother when she was about 16 years old, said Judy Coolbaugh, Keenan’s niece. Keenan taught school in Denver and was married to her husband, Edward, for 40 years.Pierson said she hears a lot of stories about Keenan’s husband. “She talks about him a lot,” Pierson said. “About how she misses him.”Keenan grew up in Bunkie, La.”I don’t remember much about the town,” Keenan said. “But it’s a funny name. It’s a funny name for a town – Bunkie.”Pierson said Keenan loves sugary coffee, with almost “more sugar than coffee.””She’s a joy to be around,” said Jennifer Sisseck, an aide. “She’s a great lady.”Do you have a birthday coming up?
