Major Calvin C. Thomas and family enjoy time around Glenwood
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado
When and why did you join the military?
I joined the military back in 1991. I joined following the foot steps of an uncle who was very instrumental in my life while growing up. He made the military a career and I was always fascinated by his dedication and commitment to the military and our country.
What did you do before joining the military?
I attended college for four years at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. While in school I worked full time in a convenience store to help fund college and support four younger brothers.
Where have you been deployed and which was your favorite?
I’ve only been deployed once, to Bagram, Afghanistan.
What was your experience in Afghanistan like?
Deploying to Afghanistan really gave me a different perspective than what I saw and heard on the daily news. The U.S. Military has changed the lives of people in that country. I was grateful and proud to be a part of something so significant and life changing for other people who are less fortunate. It was great being a part of history.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Just like any young boy growing up, initially I wanted to be a policeman, then it changed to a fireman.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
I can determine what I want my day, week, month or year to be like. I can control my destiny. If I want extraordinary things to happen in my life, I have to be prepared to do extraordinary things.
What are you looking forward to doing while in Glenwood Springs?
Turning off the blackberry, relax, enjoy my family, anything addition to that is gravy.
What are your future plans in the military?
Be an example to younger soldiers, support my leaders, do my job well and the rest will take care of itself.
Tell our readers something about you or your family that not very many people know.
My family and I are a Christian family and our faith is the driving force in our lives.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to lift weights and run. It doesn’t matter what life throws at me, if I can get a good workout at the gym I’m ready for anything.
