Make Mom magnificent with a Mother’s Day makeover

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” What to get Mom for Mother’s Day on May 9? How about a full-on makeover?
From head to toe, Glenwood Springs’ Downtown Development Authority is putting together a Mother’s Day makeover contest.
A random drawing of the entries will be held the week prior to Mother’s Day, so the recipient will have ample time to get gussied up for her big day. She’ll receive a bevy of health and beauty treats, a complimentary meal, flowers, clothing and accessories.
According to Cindy Svatos, co-chairman of the DDA’s seasonal promo committee, three downtown retailers have already donated their services to the contest.

Cutting Loose hair salon is donating a haircut and style, pedicure and manicure, and a facial and makeup application, The Flower Mart is donating flowers, and Robin’s Hallmark is contributing a gift basket.
“We’re still looking for an outfitter for clothing and accessories,” Svatos said.
Svatos said mothers of all ages are eligible for the contest.
“Anyone can nominate any mom of their choice,” she said. “I could nominate the elderly woman down the street if I’d like.”
The Mother’s Day makeover contest is part of a year-round schedule of special events the DDA’s seasonal promo committee is planning.
Svatos said members would also like to schedule a Father’s Day makeover (without the makeup application, natch, unless of course, it’s desired by Dad).
She said plans are also in the works for an antiques road show June 4-5.
“We’re working on appraisers and antiques dealers coming to Centennial Park downtown,” said Svatos.
The committee’s also planning a street dance downtown Friday, July 2, and a Dog Days of Summer event the first weekend of August.
And just before the arrival of the Grand Avenue Paving Project in September, the committee is working on holding a giant downtown garage sale with area businesses, and maybe even a Martha Stewart Stock Day, with local stockbrokers and financial advisors (“though that might be in poor taste,” Svatos said with a laugh).
“We want people to come downtown before GAPP so they know what’s available,” Svatos added.
She said those interested in entering a mom in the Mother’s Day contest should contact Dennis Bader at the Flower Mart, 210 6th Ave., Glenwood, 945-5971.
