Man convicted of sexual assault on a child
A 9th Judicial District jury convicted Michael Keith Lacefield of four charges of sexual assault on a child after about six hours of deliberation Friday. He was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault on a child less than 15 years old and one count of sexual assault on a child less than 15 years old with a pattern of abuse, according to District Attorney Martin Beeson. The trial lasted four days and was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jeff Cheney. Beeson said the range of possible penalties could include anything from probation to life in prison. Sentencing is set for Nov. 16.”Certainly we are pleased that this person has been caught and has been brought to justice, and we think it’s important that the public knows that we’re after these kinds of people and we want to protect our children,” Beeson said. “(The children) are the heart and soul of this community.”Beeson said the Parachute man was first suspected six years after the assaults. A 10-year-old girl was watching a sexual scene in a movie and made some comments that concerned her grandmother. The grandmother alerted authorities who investigated, and the case eventually went to trial this week. The girl was only 3 when the incidents occurred. He said these types of cases are difficult due to the time that has elapsed and the fact that the only witnesses are the predator and the child.”We’re thankful for a jury who saw through the smoke and mirrors of the defense and looked at the heart of the case,” Beeson said.Contact Pete Fowler: 945-8515, ext. 16611 firstname.lastname@example.orgPost Independent, Glenwood Springs Colorado CO
