Vail Daily Staff Report

EAGLE COUNTY ” A Grand Junction man was killed and a woman injured when their truck slid off Interstate 70 on Sunday.

Larry D. Simpson, of Grand Junction, was pulling a recreation trailer behind his Ford F-250 truck when it skidded off the left side on westbound I-70. The truck and trailer rolled for 150 feet and stopped upside down in the median, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Simpson and his passenger, Coleen Simpson, both 43, were taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. Larry Simpson later died at the hospital, and Coleen Simpson was treated for minor injuries. Both were wearing their seat belts.

Earlier in the day, an accident involving a motorcycle on State Highway 131 severely injured an Arizona man. Police believe Jonathan Scott Gardner, 19, of Sun City, was driving north on the road when his 1990 Yamaha Raider skidded into the southbound lane and struck a Toyota pickup truck driven by Lawrence L. Liang, of Las Vegas.

Gardner was thrown from the motorcycle. He was flown to Denver General Hospital in critical condition. Neither Liang nor his passenger, Brad L. Stainette, also of Las Vegas, was injured. Gardner was wearing a helmet and eye protection at the time.

The State Patrol believes Gardner was driving too fast for the wet road and rainy conditions.
