ASPEN ” A man was found dead on a steep scree slope on the South Maroon peak near Aspen on Friday.

The man’s identity was not known as of 3:20 p.m., when a statement was released by the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office regarding his death.

A group of climbers called the Gunnison Counthy Sheriff’s Office at about 8:30 a.m. on Friday to report that they had spotted what appeared to be a woman lying in a scree field about 500 feet below the peak of South Maroon, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office. The South Maroon Peak is one of the two popular 14,000-foot peaks known as the Maroon Bells.

A team of rescuers reached the man by around 2:20 p.m., and reported that it appeared he had died as a result of a fall. Although it was originally reported that the climber was a woman, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said in their 3:20 p.m. press release that the victim was male.

Although the man was found a short distance inside Gunnison County, and not in Pitkin County, the Aspen-based team agreed to undertake the recovery effort on behalf of Gunnison County.

DiSalvo said the reporting parties, who were not identified, had been out of cell phone range when they spotted the figure in the scree field, and had climbed for an hour before getting reception and calling authorities.

The man’s body was due to be airlifted off South Maroon Peak Friday afternoon by a Summit County Life Guard helicopter, according to the sheriff’s office.
