Man hurt in plane wreck

A 47-year-old Silt man was injured Sunday morning when his ultralight plane struck a power line and crashed east of New Castle.

Robert Glenn Porter was in stable condition Sunday evening at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, having undergone surgery after he suffered a compound fracture of his right arm and another of his right leg above the knee.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office was notified at 10:11 a.m. of the crash, which occurred west of West Canyon Tree Farm on Highway 6 east of New Castle.

Porter had left the Garfield County Airport near Rifle at 8:50 a.m.

He struck power lines that were about 25 to 30 feet from the ground. The plane hit the ground about 127 feet from the lines and traveled about 25 more feet before coming to rest.

Porter was alone in the aircraft and was found outside the plane with part of his seat from the plane. It suffered damage to its frame, wings, prop and instrument control panel.

The Federal Aviation Administration in Salt Lake City was notified and advised the Sheriff’s Office that the plane could be moved after photos were taken and other evidence was gathered.

Assisting in the rescue were Burning Mountain Fire, New Castle Ambulance, Glenwood Springs Fire and EMS, the Colorado State Patrol and the New Castle Police Department.
