GLENWOOD SPRINGS – A man was pepper-sprayed in the face last week after allegedly getting into a fight and then hopping fences in hopes of eluding police.Neal Anthony Ring, 31, of Glenwood Springs, was arrested on suspicion of fighting, resisting arrest and obstructing a peace officer shortly after midnight as Dec. 26 turned to Dec. 27. The charges are misdemeanors.According to police chief Terry Wilson, an officer was dispatched to a report of a fight in progress near the Riviera restaurant downtown. The officer tried to contact Ring, he added, and Ring turned away and took off running.Ring allegedly ran into the alley behind the Springs Bar & Grille, then jumped a fence into the backyard of a residence on the 700 block of Cooper Avenue.Ring jumped a second fence, and was scaling a third fence when the officer caught up, Wilson said.”The officer advised him he was under arrest, and he continually pulled away,” Wilson said. “Pepper spray was deployed into Ring’s face.”The resistance wasn’t particularly violent and Ring was mainly wrestling with the officer, trying to pull away and keep running, Wilson said.Ring was taken into custody after he was pepper sprayed and a second officer arrived. He posted a $2,600 bond the same day he was arrested and will appear Jan. 8 in Glenwood Springs Municipal Court.Contact Pete Fowler: 384-9121pfowler@postindependent.com
