Man shot in chest after five-hour standoff with Boulder police

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) ” A man who had been sitting in a wheelchair and claimed his oxygen tank had a detonator was shot by police in the chest after a five-hour standoff at a Boulder hospital Monday.

Boulder Community Hospital spokesman Rich Sheehan said Terrance Baughman, 32, who was shot in the chest, was taken to surgery. His condition wasn’t known.

Police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said Baughman got out of the wheelchair during the standoff, prompting officers to fire.

“It was his movement that triggered the confrontation,” Huntley said.

Officers weren’t been able to deactivate the device on Baughman’s oxygen tank. Police used a robot to remove the device from the hospital and take it to a nearby park and dismantle it.

Baughman, believed to be from Boulder, was once a patient at the hospital. It wasn’t known why he was at the hospital Monday.

The standoff started around 9 a.m. at the north-Boulder hospital when the man, in a vestibule outside the emergency room, said he had a detonator. The bomb squad and SWAT team officers responded.

Five patients in the immediate area were taken to safety and the hospital was locked down.

Sheehan said the 200-bed hospital remained on partial lockdown Monday afternoon. Emergency-room patients were diverted to other hospitals.
