Man slashed in Basalt

Basalt police are investigating an apparent knifing incident from Wednesday night.

Police were called to 7-Eleven and told that the male victim was waiting for them at Basalt Middle School, about a block away from the convenience store.

“He had a 4-inch laceration on his cheek, from his ear toward his nose,” said Sgt. Penny Paxton of the Basalt Police Department. “But the guy refused medical attention, but later he went to ER and had some stitches. It was not super serious, but it was a good cut.”

The victim is 32 and lives in Silt, Paxton said.

Paxton said a language barrier between police and the victim have made the case, which she called a “kind of convoluted story,” a difficult one to pin down.

What police believe happened, however, was that the victim and suspect had been drinking beer and watching a soccer match on television at a Basalt residence.

“And a fight ensued,” Paxton said, “and the guy got slashed across the face with a knife.”

She said she did not know what type of knife the weapon was.

A third party, who was not a witness to the incident, notified police. The caller apparently saw the victim after the fight, bleeding from his face.

No arrest warrants have been issued, Paxton said.

“We’re kind of piecing things together and trying to get to the root of what happened through this victim,” she said, noting that he did want to not report the incident to authorities.
