Marble motorcyclist dies in Highway 133 crash

A Marble man died when his motorcycle burst into flames after colliding with a Suburban on Highway 133 Sunday afternoon.Motorcyclist Kenneth Wahlbrink, 40, attempted to pass a semitrailer at about 4 p.m. near milepost 57 of Highway 133 when he lost control and laid the bike down in the northbound lane, according to a Colorado State Patrol press release. After sliding a short distance, Wahlbrink and his motorcycle collided with a northbound Chevy Suburban. Upon impact, the motorcycle burst into flames, and the fire quickly spread to the the Suburban.Wahlbrink sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Suburban, Barton Chandler, 57, of Basalt, was uninjured.Fire crews from Basalt and Carbondale responded and extinguished the fire.Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash, and toxicology results are pending. High speed on the part of the motorcycle driver may be a contributing factor in the crash, according to the press release.The Garfield County Sheriff’s and Pitkin County Sheriff’s offices assisted at the scene.
