Marketplace revenues are needed to push town forward

Dear Editor,

I am incensed at the personal and mean-spirited attacks on Ms. Lamont (her family has unsurpassed commitment to this Valley), as well as Ms. Hasselbring, whose appropriate contributions to the debate were dismissed solely because of their relationship with Eric Gross, Brian Huster’s local counsel.

Shame on those who demean Ms. Lamont and Ms. Hasselbring for expressing their opinion on the Marketplace! It seems those of you who are self-described “progressives,” revert to draconian notions about women. This issue is too important to be swayed by the knee-jerk politics of some.

Most important is our ability to assess the town’s needs and preserve the integrity of our town.

In recent years, the town has been stymied from many worthy projects because of our lack of available funds: a Crystal River study to protect this valued resource; attracting sustainable technology industries; economic development on Main Street, beautifying the entrance to town; affordable housing for police, firemen, educators and other civil servants; support to assist CCAH, the Clay Center, KDNK and other worthy area organizations.

The town is currently re-directing recreation development funds from new projects, facilities and parks (as mandated), to ongoing, routine operations. The revenue shortfalls facing other towns has been postponed, not averted in Carbondale.

Like it or not, it’s our past, it’s our present – for a more viable future – vote “yes.”
