Marketplace takes away character

Dear Editor,

I am a working mother with very little extra time on my hands. However, one thing I value more than time is the character and spirit of Carbondale. Yes, we need convenient shopping, but not at the expense of the charm of our town.

Big-box expert Dr. Kenneth Stone stated that a 125,000-square-foot store needs a population of 12,000 to support it. Do you really think people from Glenwood Springs or further will pass by the Wal-Mart, Target and Lowe’s in Glenwood, or not bother with the Super Wal-Mart in Rifle, to shop in our big-box store? And if people from Aspen come down to shop at our big box, will they go to Main Street to patronize our art galleries and restaurants?

Stop kidding yourself. The proposed Crystal River Marketplace will not work in Carbondale.

We have a special town and I want it to remain that way. This statement does not mean no development, it just means no wrong development. We need smaller-scale development that fits the scale and character of Carbondale; a development which respects our natural environment and the beauty of our town; a developer who will work with the residents of Carbondale to create a shared vision. I urge people to stop by 319 Main St. to see the Town Mothers display, and vote “no” on July 15, so that we can come up with a development plan that works for Carbondale.
