Marketplace would remain vacant

Dear Editor,

It would be foolish to assume that life will imitate art, as in “if we build it, they will come.” Yet that is what “yes” voters will be doing on July 15 in Carbondale.

With many commercial vacancies throughout the town, especially up and down Highway 133, one has to conclude there is no demand for more shopping centers like the Crystal River Marketplace.

When Target has signed on for another location just down the road, Lowe’s is ready to be their neighbor, and Wal-Mart is building a mega-store in Rifle, we are left with not only few major retailers as a possible tenant, but little reason for any to become one.

I guess the purpose of the Marketplace’s 380-foot landscaped wall is to hide the vacant storefronts on the other side.
