SPRING VALLEY, Colorado ” Colorado Mountain College Theatre presents “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” a wickedly funny Irish play that is poignant, wistful and brutally tragicomic, all at once.

Written by Martin McDonagh ” who some have characterized as the most significant new playwright to have emerged in the 21st century ” “The Cripple of Inishmaan” takes an unsparing look at the bleak though weirdly hilarious lives of small-town villagers subsisting on little more than local “news” and unrealistic hopes. The play is directed by Wendy Moore.

On the barren headlands of coastal Ireland, on the fringes of civilization in general, these people are so far out of the loop, they are perfectly at home on this planet Earth that is, apparently, just as much out of the loop as they are, having been dethroned from its position of centrality in the universe.

For these people, the hope that the other universe ” America ” holds out (a movie deal) is no hope at all. America is just another pipe dream in a universe of pipe dreams. In itself, “The Cripple of Inishmaan” follows in that line of great Irish drama and storytelling immortalized by Yeats, Joyce, Synge, O’Casey, Shaw, and, now, McDonagh.

Opening on Thursday, March 5, there will be six evening performances and one matinee in the New Space Theatre, Calaway Building at Spring Valley. Dates and times are: 7 p.m. March 5-7 and March 12-14; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15.

Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. For reservations call 947-8258.
