Martinez, Schmueser lead Rifle wrestlers in Wyoming

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. – Rifle’s wrestling team went 1-6 at the Friday-Saturday Bill Thoman Jr. Invitational in Green River, Wyo.

The Bears defeated Scottsbluff (40-39) at the big tournament, which drew schools from multiple states. They lost to Torrington (38-34), Uintah (60-15), Evanston (36-35), Lander (43-27), Vista Ridge (35-31) and Moffat County (52-30).

James Martinez and Larry Schmueser both had big tournaments for Rifle. Martinez went 7-0 at 140 pounds. Schmueser matched Martinez’s record at 130 pounds.

Devon Godeski went 5-2 at 112 pounds for the Bears.

PALISADE, Colorado – Grand Valley placed fifth as a team at Saturday’s Palisade Invitational wrestling tournament, producing a trio of weight-class champions.

Jared Tonder majored Palisade’s Terry Williams in the 140-pound championship, while Ryan Gallegos claimed the 145-pound crown with a 4-2 win over Wesley Shingleton and Tyler Miles beat Eagle Valley’s Matt Kottenstette, 6-0, in the 152-pound final.

Jerrod Busch finished third at 135 pounds for the Cardinals, as did David Witt at 160 pounds.
